Leslie Cheung: The journey from boos to applause

張國榮

A silver Porsche once parked inside the white wall of No. 32A, Mount Kadoorie, Hong Kong. In the morning light of October 2, 1997, Leslie Cheung leaned against the door holding the newly cast key. Behind him was the minimalist space carefully designed by William Chang, and in front of him was the last safe haven in this troubled world. This superstar, who had just completed the 97th Concert, finally found an anchor for his wandering soul at a corner where the spotlight could not reach.

Blooming against the light: Starlight on the thorny road

The booing when I first came on stage is still lingering in my ears. In 1977, on the talent show stage of ATV, the young boy sang "American Pie" in a fragmented manner. The crisp sound of the audience throwing soda cans at the stage became a cruel prelude to his depressed life in the next five years. When he fainted from heatstroke while wrapped in heavy costumes on the set of "The Sword Stained with Royal Blood", and when he curled up in the prop room to take a nap during the break in filming of "The Drummer", this boy, ridiculed by the media as a "doll-faced boy", grasped the reins of fate with his bony fingers.

Soul Residence: A Private Universe of Light and Shadow

The Italian marble at the entrance reflects the trajectory of the morning and evening lines, and William Chang’s design philosophy of stripping away complexity flows through the three-story space. In front of the full-length French window on the second floor, the owner's treasured film reels are sleeping in a constant temperature cabinet, starting with "Days of Being Wild"arrive"Happy Together”, each frame of the film contains a certain Leslie Cheung in a certain time and space. On rainy nights, the skylight in the top-floor bedroom will project water ripples onto the plain white walls, resembling the blurred light and shadow captured by Wong Kar-wai's lens. There is no breathtaking eye makeup like in the "Red" concert here, only the tranquility of the steam when making coffee in the morning.

Destiny Compass: A Metaphor of Life in the Rotation of Feng Shui

The brief interlude of moving to 97 Kellett Hill in 2001 coincided with the profound dialectics of traditional Chinese geomancy. When the compass needle trembled slightly under the sycamore tree in the courtyard of 32A, thisFarewell My ConcubineThe artist who engraved Yu Ji's soul into his bones in "The Legend of the Condor Heroes" ultimately chose to follow the guidance of ancient wisdom. The return on January 4, 2002 was not a compromise, but a sincere questioning of the true nature of life after experiencing the psychological undercurrents of "Alien Dimension".

Today, the rusted doorplate still bears the marks of time, and the never-fading white roses outside the wall bear witness to the aesthetic enlightenment of an era. The long journey from boos to applause condensed into eternal amber in the morning mist of Mount Kellett - this place is not only a geographical coordinate, but also the spiritual homeland of the totem of Chinese culture. As dusk settles over the Kowloon Peninsula, one can still hear the soft sound of the silver Porsche pulling into the garage, mixed with the melody of "I" lingering around the tops of the camphor trees.
